Venango County was home to an oil boom in the years following discovery of natural oil (petroleum) in the mid-1850s. The settlement at its mouth was likewise called Venango, and is the site of present-day South Side of Oil City, Pennsylvania. This was corrupted in English as the Venango River. The name "Venango" comes from the Native American name of the region, Onenge, meaning Otter.

The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.80. 13.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 208 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.1% were married couples living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.3% were non-families. The racial makeup of the township was 98.31% White, 0.19% Native American, 0.75% Asian, and 0.75% from two or more races. There were 274 housing units at an average density of 12.2/sq mi (4.7/km 2). The population density was 23.7 people per square mile (9.1/km 2).
